Moral Mushroom Hunting-The False Moral

false-moral.jpg

Here in Northern Michigan when you are hunting for Morel mushroom, one of the first mushrooms to appear is the False Moral. I wouldn’t really call it a look alike but this is what they call it. Here it is called a beefsteak mushroom. I have also head it called a brain mushroom. I guess that is what it really resembles. It is found though out the country. But is most common in the North, and in the Mountains. It is very popular here in upper Michigan. The color is brownish becoming darker with age going to almost black. This is a fairly good size mushroom. The cap averaging two to four inches wide with a short stalk ¾ to 2 inches long. The cap sometimes will take on a saddle shape but mostly they look like a brain. The flesh is very brittle and the cap is chambered. For Habitat they are found in conifers and deciduous woods singly or in groups. This mushroom is classified as deadly. It has been found that this mushroom creates a chemical similar to what is used to make rocket fuel. It has been fatal in a number of cases. The toxins can be removed by the process of boiling. The problem is sometimes they are not completely removed. The poison appears to be cumulative. You could eat a meal of these and not have a problem. But the next meal could make you very, very sick. If you’re not sure don’t eat. In my opinion this is a good mushroom to stay away from.

There are lots of mushroom hunters who think that the beefsteak mushroom is ok to eat, but you’re correct, it’s one to stay away from. In May 2002 an 8-year-old girl from Cheboygan, Michigan, ate some beefsteak mushrooms that some friends had given her family. After eating them, her face turned yellow and she became extremely nauseated. Her mother rushed her to the doctor, who sent her to the emergency room. She became very combative, and doctors detected high levels of ammonia in her brain, which forced her liver to begin to shut down. They were concerned that it would also induce failure of other vital bodily functions, such as breathing. They called in a specialist, who diagnosed liver failure. She had to be flown to a pediatric intensive care unit in Ann Arbor, where doctors administered a diuretic that caused the stomach to absorb the poison and flush it through her system. The drugs worked and she lived.

Holy cow that is one of the weirdest looking mushrooms. I have heard about a mushroom that will kill you really fast after ingestion. I wouldn’t want that to happen to me.
Henry, that story is nuts. I am glad to hear the girl is ok.
I think I will just play it safe and eat the mushrooms from my local store and not wild ones.

I live in Missouri and have been out scouring the woods looking for morels already (not yet!). Thanks for the reminder on false morels, it could be easy to get excited thinking you have a morel when you don’t.

That mushroom looks like a human brain.
I’ve heard their good but now that I’ve seen one I don’t know if I’ll eat it.
