I live in Missouri and have been out scouring the woods looking for morels already (not yet!). Thanks for the reminder on false morels, it could be easy to get excited thinking you have a morel when you don't.

Holy cow that is one of the weirdest looking mushrooms. I have heard about a mushroom that will kill you really fast after ingestion. I wouldn't want that to happen to me.
Henry, that story is nuts. I am glad to hear the girl is ok.
I think I will just play it safe and eat the mushrooms from my local store and not wild ones.

There are lots of mushroom hunters who think that the beefsteak mushroom is ok to eat, but you're correct, it's one to stay away from. In May 2002 an 8-year-old girl from Cheboygan, Michigan, ate some beefsteak mushrooms that some friends had given her family. After eating them, her face turned yellow and she became extremely nauseated. Her mother rushed her to the doctor, who sent her to the emergency room. She became very combative, and doctors detected high levels of ammonia in her brain, which forced her liver to begin to shut down. They were concerned that it would also induce failure of other vital bodily functions, such as breathing. They called in a specialist, who diagnosed liver failure. She had to be flown to a pediatric intensive care unit in Ann Arbor, where doctors administered a diuretic that caused the stomach to absorb the poison and flush it through her system. The drugs worked and she lived.
