Fishing Bluegills Loads of Fun and Great Eating

Bluegill fishing trip

My son says it was massive murder. He loves to catch them gills and really enjoys the fish fry that follows. We packed all our gear up and headed for the lake yesterday afternoon. The action was fast. First cast I landed a large bluegill. It did not stop their. It turned into two hours of fun and produced a nice mess of fish. My bait of choice for this trip, a Black fly. My son simply used crawlers and a bobber. Both fishing baits did very well.

I would say crappie would be the closest.

For gills you really have a wide choice. I purchase pan fish fly assortments and try different colors. The royal coachman works well. I also use a bumble bee and small poppers. If one color doesn’t work try another till you hit the right combination. Thanks for your comment.

I’ve got to respectfully disagree with Larry. I think blues actually resemble perch more in taste, all though they are all better bass such as largemouth and smallies.

Thanks for your comment. No disrespect taken. All our taste buds are different. But in this case I think you could be right.

I was never that into eating bluegill, they always seemed to taste like dirt to me. I am not sure what is up with that, maybe my ex-husband wasn’t very good at cooking them.

It also could have been from the quality of water he caught them in. Thanks

for me, the best part of fishing? is eating part… i think i came across an asian recipe for this fish… if i remember correctly its cooked with soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, a little pepper… but it’s great when grilled or steamed too…

Next to fresh lake perch, bluegills have to be my favorite.

I lived on a small lake that had an excellent population, so at least two or 3 times per year we’d stock up for a massive fish fry. Sure miss those days.

Im not a big fan of bluegills. I find the taste a bit to sour and sweet at the same time. Im more into brim and barramundi, them two being my two favourite fish to eat.

Mike, You are in the best position to enjoy the fish. I seldom have a chance to entertain myself with bluegills.
Lars, I have the same best part as yours.

In the spring up here in NY when the bluegill spawn they kill our baits when fishing for bass. we catch the largest bluegills during that time frame. Some are as big as round as a desert plate !

Great blog post about pan fishing. I have found that a lot of my duck hunting hotspots are also great panfish spots!

Absolutely great website - love the information you share.

Bluegill is one of my favorite fish to go after here in the Midwest. Going ice fishing for bluegill is another awesome way to spend a winter weekend in the great outdoors.
