Fishing Bluegills Loads of Fun and Great Eating

Bluegill fishing trip

My son says it was massive murder. He loves to catch them gills and really enjoys the fish fry that follows. We packed all our gear up and headed for the lake yesterday afternoon. The action was fast. First cast I landed a large bluegill. It did not stop their. It turned into two hours of fun and produced a nice mess of fish. My bait of choice for this trip, a Black fly. My son simply used crawlers and a bobber. Both fishing baits did very well.

Crappie fishing Tips

 Crappie fishing Tips

The wind really blew here Saturday making fishing very difficult. So we waited till Sunday and decided to do some crappie and gill fishing. Along with the wind on Saturday it was very hot here. A cold front moved into the area on Sunday. The cooler weather-especially the 1st day usually slows the fishing down but we decided to go anyway. We did not catch a lot -but did wind up with some very nice fish. Enough for a good meal.. We started out using crawlers and flies on the gills then changed to ¼ oz pink and white jigs toward evening for crappies. All in all it was a nice fishing trip.Just a few quick tips for crappie fishing.Use as light of line as possible-preferably 4 or 6 lb testThe fishing jig colors that seem to work best for me are pink and white, black on black and black and white.crappie-jig.JPGIf you are fishing from shore use a weighted bobber with a 1/32 or 1/16 oz jig. This will help increase your casting distance. The bobber will also help keep the jig out of the weed beds and bottom snags.

Pause your line frequently. Many times this is when the crappies will strike.

Finally- don’t quit fishing to early. Crappies are mainly evening and night feeders. Many times they will start hitting real heavy just before dark.

Fishing Report Keweenaw Bay-Trolling for Lake Trout and Salmon

Trolling for Lake Trout and Salmon It is the 1st day of the Annual Lake Trout fishing Tournament her in L’anse Michigan today. It is very windy making a tough start . It is an offshore wind which helps a lot. Even though the bay is choppy the turnout seems to be very good. Lake trout fishing in the bay has been good over the past couple of weeks. This contest ends Sunday afternoon. If the wind doesn’t go down bobbing for lake trout will not be possible- it will strictly be a trolling game.Just a quick tip on trolling for salmon and lake trout using downriggers. Use a slider line- cut a piece of monofilament line the same pound test you are trolling with- about 10 to 15 feet long. Attach a swivel to both ends. Lower your main line down attached to your downrigger release. After you have it set into place use the swivel on one end of the line and attach to your main line. Put a fishing lure on the other end and feed it into the water. The swivel will slide down the main line and come to rest in the bow of the line from the current caused by the trolling movement. You now have a suspended line helping you cover a lot more depth area. This works really well if you are trolling for lake trout. Lake trout usually run deep but salmon will usually be suspended. Run your main line deep and attach your slider. This method gives you a good shot at both.

Fishing report-Lanse Michigan Keweenaw Bay

 Brook Trout

Not a lot to talk about for a Fishing Report. The weather here is finally warming up a bit. It has been a very cold spring. The water temperature in the bay is hanging around 39 degrees. there are some salmon and brown trout being caught. But you have to work really hard to get them. The steelhead run was not great but some nice fish were caught. The local news paper here ran some articles and pictures on catching suckers. That is pretty sad when that is the best you can come up with. With the opening of walleye and bass season this month and some warmer water things should pick up. I know that many parts of the country our way ahead of us into the fishing season. If you have any pictures of your prize catch or would like to just sent us some photos of you latest fishing trip for our gallery email them to: larry@fishhuntexplore.com

Lanse Michigan-Steelhead-smelt fishing report Keweenaw Bay-Huron River

With the weather warming up a little bit and the water coming down into a reasonable fishing range, we could have a great fishing week end here. Unfortunately I will be out of town. Some smelt have been taken in the falls river in the very early morning hours. The water level is now down but the steelhead fishing is kind of spotty. It has warmed up a little and that should help. The water in the Huron river has also come down quite a bit. Some fish are being taken but it is also on the light side. Hopefully we will see an increase in activity over the week end.

Fishing Report-Lanse Michigan Keweenaw Bay-Smelt and Steelhead

Well a little warmer here today. The water in the rivers are still quite high. Some smelt and Steelhead are being taken from the Falls River. The smelt run here over the last 5 or 6 years has been almost non existent. So I am anticipating this run will be short. The cold weather and high water not helping much. I will keep you informed as things develop though out the week.

Fishing Report-Lanse MI Keweenaw Bay-Smelt and Steelhead

Sitting here at my computer. It is April 27th and snowing again. A little snow for this part of the country -this time of year is not real unusual. But it could at lest be mixed with some rain to show its attempting to warm up. Not a chance at 22 degrees.Last week we had a nice warming trend. I was hoping that would spark things a little bit and the smelt and steelhead would start to run. Their were a few steelhead being caught in the Falls River this past week. This cold trend that has now settled in here makes it a little hard to predict. The water levels are very high making it hard to fish. If we are going to have a smelt run here it should happen shortly. Will keep you posted. The bay is completely free of ice now. If this weather straitens out I should have a report on the salmon fishing for you later in the week. Many of the inlands lakes here still have some ice on them.

Steelhead Fishing Report-Lanse Michigan-Keweenaw Bay-Huron River

Just a short note:Well another great day here. With the warmer weather the Steelhead fishing is starting to kick into gear. The water is quite high which is making fishing difficult- but some steelhead are being caught . The Huron river is very high. The warmer weather is suppose to last into the week end with a chance of showers tonight. This looks like it could be a set up for a very good fishing weekend.

Steelhead Fishing Report- Lanse Michigan Keweenaw Bay

 bisnaw.JPG

It was a beautiful day here in upper Michigan. 62 degrees with a strong wind that took the snow down like crazy. The warmer weather bringing some fisherman out to try their luck at some early steelhead fishing. Nothing happening yet. Due to the runoff from the last two snow storms the rivers are running a little high. With the warmer temperatures and the increased current feeding the bay, we may see some steelhead being caught by the end of the week. The ice on the bay is pretty well broken up. A strong south wind would probably push the ice out into lake Superior and open the bay up. I have not heard anything on the smelt run yet- but it is a little early. With the kind of winter most of us have had in the North Country- it just seems good to be dealing with open water.

Steelhead Fishing-Lanse Michigan

Well it looks like we are finally getting close to the steelhead run here in upper Michigan. After two late snowstorms and temps way below normal we are finally warming up. Water levels may get a little high do to the run off. But in my mind better to start high -then too low. Steelhead fishing here usually peaks around the end of April. Thier is still a lot of ice on the bay keeping the water temperatures down. So I am looking for a late run. The salmon fishing is at a stand still do to the ice still in the bay. The inland lakes pretty much the same. As the week develops and warmer teperatures come in to the area I hope to have a steelhead fishing report for you. Be sure to subscribe to my feed.
